MOST UNUSUAL RECORDS

· The warmest month of the year was June not July.  It was the coolest July on record at this station and the coolest at Reagan National since 1918 and Baltimore since 1891!

 

· December was the coldest month of the year and was the coldest December on record since 1989.

 

· The year’s highest maximum temp. of 95°F was the lowest on record here since the year 1989 when the year’s maximum was 94°F.

 

· No measurable rain for 23 days (October 17th to November 9th, 2000) and only 0.06 inches of rain was recorded in the last 44 days before November 9th, 2000.

 

 

TEMPERATURE

 

YEAR

• Highest maximum temp. of 95°F was recorded on June 11th.  The record maximum at this station is 102°F recorded on 7/16/88.

 

• Lowest minimum temp. of 9°F on January 22nd which was +1.3°F above the average recorded minimum for January but was the lowest January minimum since 1997.

 

• There were only 21 days that were equal to or greater than 90°F for the maximum temperature.  This year had the least >= 90°F days since 1996 which had only 16 days. The average is 30 days.

 

• There were 87 days which were less than or equal to 32°F for the minimum temperature.  This year had the most <= 32°F days since 1996 which had 97 days. The average is 84 days.

 

MONTH

• The month of December had the greatest negative departure with a –8.2° departure on the average monthly mean temperature.

 

• The month of March had the greatest positive departure of +6.5°F on the average monthly mean temperature.

 

• 33°F on Dec. 8th was the second lowest high minimum ever recorded for Dec. at this station. The record is 31°F set in 1989.

• The 38°F temperature range on April 6th was the greatest daily temp. range for the year.

 

• The 3°F temperature range on March 21th, and April 18th was the lowest daily temp. range for the year.

 

 

PRECIPITATION

 

YEAR

• Total precipitation measured 45.96 inches, a departure of +2.00 inches.

 

• Precipitation total from October was 0.06 inches, a departure of –3.47 inches and the driest month ever recorded at this station in the last 20 years.

 

The year will go on record as wetter than average in precipitation but it was a very dry fall period.

 

MONTH

• The greatest number of days with measurable precipitation in one month was 16 days in June.

 

• July had the greatest total rainfall: 6.73 inches, a +2.62 inch departure.

 

• October had the least total rainfall: 0.06 inches, a –3.41 inch departure.

 

DAY

• The greatest calendar day rainfall for the year was 2.20 inches which occurred on April 17th.

 

• September 25th and 26th had the greatest 24-hour rainfall for the year:  2.28 inches.

 

HOUR

• The greatest one-hour rainfall was 1.74 inches recorded on July 28th.  This occurrence was the greatest one-hour rainfall rate on record. Records on rainfall intensity began in 1992.

 

FIVE-MINUTE

• The greatest five-minute rainfall was 0.47 inches which fell on September 2nd and was the greatest in a 5-minute period since July 23rd, 1992 (0.58 inches).

 

 

SNOW

 

YEAR

• The year’s total snowfall at this station was 22.9 inches; the most since 1996 (57.8 inches).

 

• The largest snow of the year was 10.8 inches on January 25th.

 

MONTH

• January had the greatest monthly snowfall total for the year with 17.3 inches.

 

STORM

• The greatest snowfall in one storm was observed on Jan. 25th:  10.8 inches.

 

• The greatest calendar day snowfall was observed on Jan. 25th:  10.8 inches.

 

• The greatest 24-hour snowfall was observed on Jan. 25th:  10.8 inches.

 

• The greatest snowfall on the ground at any one time in the year at sunset was January 25th with 12.1 inches.  On December 25, 2000, 0.5 inches of snow on the ground gave us our first white Christmas since 1998.

 

 

WIND

 

YEAR

• The greatest wind was recorded on January 13, 2000 which had a gust to 64 mph which is the highest on record at this station.  This 64 mph wind gust was caused by the passage of a cold front, which was followed by the highest barometric pressure (30.73 inches) of 2000.

 

• The windiest month of 2000 was January.

 

 

BAROMETRIC PRESSURE

 

YEAR

• January 15th and December 13th both were tied for the year's highest barometric pressure at 30.73 inches.

 

• March 28th had the year's lowest barometric pressure, 29.31 inches.

• The cloudiest month was April which was also the cloudiest of any month at this station since November 1992.

 

• The clearest month was October which was also the clearest of any month since June 1996.
