THE YEAR 2007
January was the fifth warmest January on record in the past 27 years with a mean temperature
of 39.6 °F and a +5.4 °F departure for the month and a little below average in precipitation.
January last year was the warmest January on record here.
The highest temperature was 71 °F on the 6th and the lowest temperature was 14 °F on the 26th
but the average January minimum temperature is 9 °F.
The 71 °F maximum was only three degrees from being the warmest temperature in January in
the last 27 years!
Also on the 6th a dew point temperature of 63.4 °F was recorded, a very high value for January.
The daily temperature range of 36 °F on the 27th was the highest maximum daily temperature
range in January since 1996.
January was a dichotomy with the first 16 days being very warm for January and the second half
of the month being near average but feeling colder than that due to the extraordinary warmth of
the first half of the month.
The January precipitation total was 2.69 inches from 13 days with precipitation which was the
greatest number of precipitation days for January since 1998 but was the 9th driest January in
the last 27 years.
January was a just a little above average in cloud coverage. The precipitation departure was -0.66 inches.
The total snowfall for January was 1.8 inches which was a departure of - 6.0 inches which was
much below average but last year in January we had only a trace of snow.
The high wind gust of 37 mph occurred on two days. The west wind on the 19th at 1001 was
37 mph and on the 20th at 0628 from the WSW was also 37 mph.
The maximum barometer reading of 30.76 inches on the 17th was the highest barometric reading
recorded since January 28, 2005.
The lowest barometer reading for the month was only 29.62 on the 28th which was the fifth highest
minimum monthly barometer reading for January in the last 27 years as there was no major storm
system this month.

The maximum today was also only three degrees from being the warmest weather in January in the last 27 years!
Reagan National had a maximum of 73 °F that broke the 1950 record of 72 °F for the date.
The highest temperature ever recorded at Reagan National in the month of January was 79 °F on January 26, 1950.

FEBRUARY
February was much below average in temperature and a little below in precipitation.
February's mean monthly temperature of 29.5 °F was – 8.0 °F colder than the average.
It was the coldest February in the past 27 years by 1.8 °F. The average maximum 37.2 °F
and average minimum 21.8 °F temperatures were also new 27-year low records.
The minimum of 7 °F on the 6th was the lowest temperature here since 1-24-2005 and the
coldest in February since 1996 and the seventh lowest minimum temperature in February
in the last 27 years.
February’s total precipitation was 2.50 inches a departure of -0.49 with 8 days having
measurable precipitation.
The snow on the 25th was the largest snow of the winter. See snow time lapse at -

The storm total was 5.3 inches from 0356 until 1405 hours; note how the snow settles from
1400 until a little after dark.
(Also note the camera angle makes it look like it was more than 5.3 inches.)
The total snowfall for February was 9.4 inches and was +2.6 inches more than the 27-year average.
The maximum temperature for the month of 57 °F, which was the third lowest monthly maximum
ever recorded in February, came only three days before the snowstorm.
February broke twelve 27-year daily records of which eight were for low temperatures.
February had 25 days with the temperature at or below freezing with 19 days being the average
and 26 being the record.
February had 7 days that the temperature never went above freezing with 2.7 days being the
average and 9 being the record set in 1996.
The lowest maximum in February was 19 °F which was the third lowest ever recorded in February
with the other two occurring in February 1996. The minimum wind chill for the month was -9.3 °F
the lowest on record for February since wind chill records were started in 2003.
The lowest dew point for the month was -15.7 °F on the 5th at 0932; the lowest recorded here
for any month since dew point records were started in 2003.
The maximum gust of 51 mph from the WNW on the 22nd at 1530 was associated with a cold front
and was the highest wind recorded here since 11-13-2003 when a gust of 56 mph was recorded.
This tied the 27-year record set in 1990 for highest wind recorded in February.
This was also the fifth highest wind gust ever recorded at this station in the past 27 years.
February also had the highest wind run 1,854.5 miles for any February. (Records since 2003)

March was much warmer and drier than average with 72% of the month’s precipitation occurring on the 15th and 16th.
The 2.26 inches of precipitation that occurred in this 24 hour period was the second greatest on record for March since
24 hour precipitation records were started in 1997.
The March total precipitation was 3.33 inches and was the 11th driest March on record in the last 27 years with a
departure of - 0.86 inches.
The average March mean temperature was 47.3 °F a departure of only + 2.3 °F but was the 5th highest in the past 27 years.
The highest temperature was 82 °F on the 14th and 27th and the lowest temperature was 14 °F on the 8th.
This was the lowest March temperature on record since 1996 when 11 °F was recorded.
March has had only four lower minimum temperatures in the last 27 years.
The average daily temperature range of 22.4 °F for March was the 2nd highest on record.
Only the record of 23.6 °F set in 1986 was higher.
The highest daily temperature range during March was 41 °F that occurred on the 15th which tied the 27-year record for
the month set in 1981 and 1994.
The total snowfall for March was 3.2 inches and was + 0.5 inches more than the 27-year average for March and was
the most snow in March since 1999.
Only seven years in the past 27 years have had more snow in March.
The minimum relative humidity on the 2nd of 13 percent was the lowest recorded in March since March 18th and 19th
of 1990 when 12 percent was recorded which is the 27-year record for March.
The maximum barometric pressure this month was 30.71 inches on the 21st which was the highest pressure recorded
in March since 1996 when the record for March was set at 30.91 inches.
The maximum wind gust was 43 mph from the west on the 5th at 1312.
Only seven March months in the past 27 years have had stronger winds and the record is 53 mph in 1997.
The predominant March weather feature was high pressures with 17 days and with low pressures only 4 days;

APRIL
April was -2.1 °F cooler than average and +1.17 inches above average in precipitation or the fifth wettest April in the past 27 years.
April’s mean monthly temperature was 53.45 °F and tied for the sixth coolest in the last 27 years and the coolest April since 1997.
April started out as one of the coolest on record but the warm temperatures in the last part of April offset the cold start.
The lowest April minimum temperature was 26 °F which was the lowest since 1985 when the April record was set at 22 °F.
The daily mean temperature on the 8th tied for the 2nd coldest April day in the past 27 years and the lowest mean for April since 1985.
There were five days the minimum temperature was 32 °F or less in April, the most since 7 days were recorded in 1982 which is the current record.
April had 9 days with measurable precipitation but 2.42 inches or 51% of the month’s rainfall fell on the 15th which was
the second most rainfall on an April day since April 15, 1983 when the 27 year April record of 2.57 inches occurred.
The 2.57 inches in 24 hours on the 15th and 16th was a new record for April. (Records since June 1996)
The snowfall total on the 7th was 0.9 inches and was the second largest April snowfall in the past 27 years.
The last measurable snow to occur in April was 1.0 inch on April 9, 2000.
The maximum wind gust of 53 mph from the west recorded on the 16th at 1500 was the highest wind recorded in April since 1982
and was the second highest for April and tied for fourth place for the highest wind gust recorded here in the past 27 years.
April’s wind run was 1875.7 miles. (Records since 2003) The wind run for the 16th was 238.5 miles which is now the new daily record for all months.

The lowest barometric reading was 29.17 inches on the 15th at 2:29 hours and was the lowest barometric pressure here since
March 8, 2005 when 29.16 inches was recorded. It was also the cloudiest April since 2000.

May was the second driest May in the last 27 years with above average in temperatures.
The mean temperature (67.4 °F) was + 2.7 °F above the average making it tied with 2000 for the fifth warmest May in the past 27 years.
The record maximum temperature was 91 °F on the 26th and the lowest temperature recorded in May was 40 °F on the 8th.
The minimum dew point temperature for May was 22 °F on the 6th which set a new minimum record for the month (Records since 2003).
The 37 °F daily temperature range on the May 8th was the highest in May since 1998 when another 37 °F range was recorded.
The May record is 42 °F set in 1992.
The May rainfall of 1.38 inches was the second driest in the past 27 years.
May had a -2.86 inch departure and the driest since 1986 when 1.05 inches occurred which was the driest May in the last 27 years.
The intense rain of a strong thunderstorm on the 27th gave 0.38 inches of rain in five minutes which was the most intense rainfall in
May since 1995 when 0.38 inches which is the record in a five minute period.
This thunderstorm also had about a half a minute in which a discernible amount of very soft hail became slush on impact.
May had few cloudy days and was the clearest May since 1997.
The highest barometric pressure was recorded on the 24th at 30.50 inches which was the highest recorded in May since 2003.
May 2003 had the highest pressure of 30.53 inches recorded in the past 27 years.
The maximum gust of 44 mph on the 27th that occurred in a strong thunderstorm was the highest in May since 2002 with the 27-year
record for May being 45 mph set in 1993.

June was very warm and for the most part dry (only 0.09 inches of rain occurred from June 14th to 26th a 12 day period).
June’s mean temperature (75.1°F) tied for the fifth hottest on record with a +1.6° F departure from average.
The 2.11 inches of rain was a deficit of -1.88 inches and was the driest June since 1999 and tied for the 6th driest in the
past 27 years.
June had 9 days with 90°F or above temperatures.
June’s highest maximum temperature was 96° F on June 8th and 19th which was the highest June monthly maximum
since June 2002. The June record is 97 °F set in the years 1988 and 1994.
The 32 °F daily temperature range on the 7th was the greatest daily range for June since 1999. The 27 year record is
34 °F set in 1980 and 1994.
The maximum gust was 29 mph from the west on the 21st at 1814; the average maximum wind gust recorded for June
is 32 mph.
The minimum barometric reading for the month was 29.43 inches on the 3rd which was the result of the remains of
tropical storm Barry and was the lowest pressure recorded in June since 2003 when it was 29.38 inches.
The record low pressure for June is 29.26 recorded in 1972 during the remains of Hurricane Agnes.

JULY
July was the driest July in my records with only 1.69 inches precipitation and a -2.63 inch departure
and a little below average in warmth.
The previous driest July was in 1985 when 1.77 inches was recorded.
The maximum one day rain was only 0.46 inches which was the least for any of the past 27 Julys.
It was the first July without at least one rain of an inch or more since 1999.
July’s mean average temperature (77.7°F) was only a - 0.1 °F departure from average but was
coolest since 2004.
It was also the fourteenth coolest on record in the last 27 years.
July’s lowest maximum temperature was 80 °F which is the second highest for any July since 1995
when the record of 82 °F was set.
July’s average temperature range was 21.0 °F the most since 1988 and only four years have been
greater in the last 27 years.
The 28 °F daily temperature range on the 8th and 9th was the most for July since 2002.
The lowest dew point for July was 43 °F on the first at 1357 which is the lowest for July since dew
point records were started in 2004.
The maximum dew point for the month was also the lowest since 2004.
The monthly average relative humidity was 65% and the lowest since 1993 when 64% was the average.
The maximum gust of 27 mph from the west on the 15th at 2011 was the least for the maximum
monthly wind gust recorded for July since 2004.
But the total wind run for the month was 722.4 miles the second highest since wind run records
were started in 2002.

August was hot but near average in precipitation.
The average mean temperature was 78.1 degrees, a departure of +2.5° F.
It was the sixth hottest August in the last 27 years and the warmest since 2005.
On 14 days the temperature was equal to or above 90° F and 4 days equal to or above 95° F.
Only four Augusts had more ninety-degree days in the last 27 years. (1980, 1983, 1988, 2002)
Only 1983 and 1988 had a higher maximum temperature reading for August in the last 27 years
than this month's 99° F recorded on the 8th.
It was also the highest temperature record here since July 6, 1999 when it was 100 °F and the
highest in August since August 15, 1988 when it was also 100.
Only five times in the past 27 years has the maximum temperature been higher than it was on the 8th.
The daily mean temperature for the 8th was 88.5°F the warmest day every recorded in August.
This year has had 38 days with a maximum temperature of 90°F or more.
The minimum temperature of 78 °F on the 8th also tied for the highest minimum temperature ever
recorded in August in the past 27 years.
It is also interesting that the lowest temperature during this August was 62 °F and in every August
in the past 27 years it has been lower except 2001 when it was also 62 °F.
The average is 56 °F and the record minimum for August is 46 °F.
We had eleven days with measurable precipitation that was the most since 2004 but the total for
August was still - 0.05 inches below average.
The August rainfall was essentially average but 49 percent of the rain came on the 20th and 21st.
Since Dec. 2006 only two of the last nine months have had above average rainfall.
For the year we have a deficit of -8.26 inches in precipitation.
A 27 mph wind gust from the west on the 16th at 924 hours was the highest wind recorded in August
but less than the average of 30 mph.
The wind run for August was 781.1 miles the most since wind run records were started in 2002.
The lowest relative humidity for the month was 25 % on the 18th and was the least in August since
1998 and dew point temperature fell to 40 °F on the 18th which is a new record for August since
dew point records were started in 2003.

SEPTEMBER
September was the second driest on record here in the last 27 years with only 0.48
inches of precipitation a -3.69 inch departure.
September had the highest precipitation deficit of 2007 and for the year we are now
- 11.95 inches below average on precipitation.
Only September of 2005 was drier with only 0.27 inches of rain.
It was also very warm for September and the third warmest in the last 27 years,
only 1980, and 1998 were warmer.
September only had six days with measurable rain; only three Septembers in the last
27 years have had less.
Only four months in the last 324 months has the precipitation total for the month been
less than this September’s total.
September’s average sky cover made it not only the clearest September in the last
27 years but the clearest of any month in the past 27 years although October of 2001
was almost as clear.
Also with the clear skies and little rain the lowest relative humidity for September was
22% ; only four Septembers in the past 27 years have recorded a lower minimum.
September’s mean average temperature was 71.8 °F which was a +4.0 °F departure.
The maximum temperature for September was 92 °F on the 7th, 8th, and 10th and
was the highest temperature in September since 1985 when 97 °F was recorded.
Also the lowest maximum for the month was 70 °F which was only one degree from
the 27-year record 71 °F in 1980.
The four days with 90 °F or higher in September were the most since 1985.
September’s average temperature range was 22.0 °F the most in September in the
past 27 years due to the clear skies of this month; the previous record was 1980.
The maximum temperature range was 31 °F the most since 1989.
The maximum wind gust of 30 mph from the north occurred on the 28th at 1618
and the average is 31 mph.
The highest barometer was 30.51 inches on the 30th which was the highest
barometer recorded in September since
1985 when 30.56 was recorded and the third highest in the past 47 years;
that includes my barometer records from Rockingham County, Virginia.

OCTOBER
October was very warm and wet with 92% of the month’s rainfall occurring from October 24th to the 27th.
October’s total rainfall was 5.66 inches a + 2.05 inch departure and was the 5th wettest October on record.
It was the wettest month since November 2006 and was only the second month of 2007 with above average
precipitation.
The current precipitation departure for the year is still – 9.90 inches. October had only five days with
measurable precipitation; only two years in the past 27 years have had less (2000 and 2001).
With the dry conditions and few days with precipitation we had an average daily temperature range for
October of 19.6 °F the most since 1987 when 20.5 °F was recorded.
The precipitation total on October 26th was 1.62 inches, the most precipitation record in a day since
April 15, 2007.
The storm total of the 24th - 27th was 5.18 inches the most precipitation recorded here in a storm since
June 2006.
The average maximum temperature for October was 73.5 °F a new 27 year record high for October with
the old record being 73.2 °F in 1984.
The mean temperature for October was 63.7 °F only 0.4 °F less than the 1984 record warmest October
in the past 27 years.
The average monthly mean temperature was a +7.7 ° F departure.
The highest maximum temperature for October was 90° F on the 9th, a 10.7 °F departure for the average
highest October temperature.
This was a new record maximum temperature for October; the old record was only 86 °F set in 1985.
The daily mean temperature for the 9th was 79 °F and was 2.5 °F warmer than any previous warmest
October day.
October set a new high dew point record on the 19th. A new maximum heat index record on the 9th was
10 °F above the old records.
However, records for these two parameters are only recorded for the past five years.
The lowest maximum temperature was 36° F on the 29th and 30th; the average is 34 °F.
No killing frost occurred here during October.
There were 17 daily records set during the month of which 14 were for heat!!
The cold strong high pressure on the 29th gave the lowest temperatures of the month and the highest
barometer reading for October of 30.59 inches, the highest in October since 2001.

NOVEMBER
Twelve Novembers have been cooler but only four have been drier in the past 27 years.
November was the fourth month of 2007 to have below average temperatures and the
ninth month of 2007 to have below average precipitation.
The November average mean temperature was 46.2°F with a departure of -1.0 °F and
the coolest November since 2002.
We had 8 days with measurable precipitation which was the least in November since
2003.
The November rainfall deficit -2.17 inches was the least precipitation in November since
2001.
For the year, we now have a deficit of -12.07 inches in precipitation.
The greatest daily rainfall was only 0.97 inches, the least since November 2001.
It was also the cloudiest November since 1992 and only three have been cloudier in
the past 27 years.
The greatest daily temperature range was 33 °F on the 22nd and was the highest in
November since 2003 when 35 °F was recorded.
The lowest temperature of 25 °F on the 24th was the lowest in November since 2002;
the record is 18 °F in 1989.
The highest minimum temperature for the month was only 48 °F and lowest since 1998
in November when 47 °F was recorded which is the 27 year record. The highest dew point
for the month was only 59.7 °F which was the lowest for November since dew point
records were started in 2002.
The maximum gust of 37 mph from the WNW on the 22nd at 1705 hours was the highest
wind gust recorded here November since 2003.
The minimum barometer reading of 29.52 inches on the 15th was the highest minimum
barometer since 2001 meaning no really strong storms occurred.

- DECEMBER 2007 SUMMARY
December was above average in temperature and precipitation.
The December mean monthly temperature of 39.0 °F which was near average with a departure of + 1.2 °F
and was the thirteen warmest December in the past 27 years.
There were 16 days that the minimum temperature equaled or fell below freezing.
The monthly average daily temperature range was 12.9 °F which was the lowest in the past 27 years with
the previous record being 13.1 °F.
The maximum temperature range for the month was only 20 °F which came on the 27th and was also the
lowest on record for any December in the past 27 years.
The precipitation total was 3.50 inches a departure of +0.28 inches and the tenth wettest December in the last
27 years and the wettest since 2003.
It was only the third month of 2007 that the precipitation amount was above average.
December had 16 days with measurable precipitation; the most since 1996 which also had 16 days and is the
27-year record for December.
It was also the cloudiest December on record (although 1992 was almost as cloudy) and was in part responsible
for the record low temperature range for the month.
But for the year the precipitation total was only 32.96 inches making it the driest on record in the last 27 years
with a deficit of -11.79 inches.
The snowfall total for December was 4.0 inches on December 5th and the average is 2.8 inches.
The snowfall total for 2007 was only 19.3 inches which was a departure of – 2.2 inches.
The lowest temperature recorded for the month was 17 °F on the 6th and the highest temperature was 62 °F on the 12th.
The maximum wind gust for December was 48 mph from the WSW at 1859 hours on the 16th which is highest in
December since 2004 when a 49 mph gust was recorded and the second highest for 2007.
The month’s maximum barometer reading of 30.57 inches on the 1st and the lowest barometric pressure was
29.33 inches on the 16th, which was the lowest in December since 2003 when 29.23 inches was recorded.
