THE YEAR 2006
    JANUARY 2006 SUMMARY
    January was the warmest January on record with a mean temperature of 42.48 °F and
    a +8.6 °F departure for the month.
    The previous warmest January was 1990 with a mean temperature of 41.87 °F which 
    also followed the coldest December on record at this station. 
    The precipitation was just a little less than average with a -0.34 inch departure.  
    The highest temperature was 66 °F on the 30th and the lowest temperature was only 
    21 °F on the 7th; compare that to the low of 7 °F last year.  
    The warm January also had 4 days with thunder; the previous record was only 2 days.
    (Records since 1995)  
    The lowest daily mean temperature for January was 29.5 °F which was the highest 
    ever recorded in January except for January 1990 which was 31.0 °F.
    The daily temperature range of 33 °F on the 18th and the 28th was the highest
    maximum daily temperature range in January since 1996. 
    Only 1986 had a higher average daily temperature range for the month of 18.7 °F.
    The January rainfall total was 3.02 inches from 11 days with precipitation. 
    The total snowfall for January was 0.0 inches which was the least ever recorded here
    in the last 26 years; the previous record was 1983 with a trace of snow.  
    In 1983 we had just enough snow and sleet on the 22nd to be observed on the cold
    frozen bare ground but not enough to measure. 
    This year we had only two days with flurries on the 14th and the 25th but in both
    occasions the snow flakes melted as they fell.
    On January 23rd 2005 the lowest wind chill was -9.7 °F at 0701. 
    The lowest wind chill this month was only +9.3 °F on the 15th   at 0700. 
    The maximum wind run was 183.5 miles on the 25th that was the highest wind run 
    since 4-3-2005 when it was 188.5 miles.  
    The high wind gust of 45 mph from the WNW on the 15th at 0401 was the strongest 
    wind gust recorded in January since 2000.  
    The maximum barometer reading of 30.69 inches was on the 22nd and the lowest barometer
    reading for the month was only 29.29 on the 14th which was the lowest monthly minimum
    barometer reading for January since 2003.  
    January was a little above average in cloud coverage but not as cloudy as last January.

FEBRUARY
    FEBRUARY 2006 SUMMARY
    February was only very little below average in precipitation and temperature. 
    February's mean monthly temperature was - 0.1 °F colder than the average. 
    February’s precipitation total had a - 0.13 inch departure with only 6 days having measurable precipitation.
    The snow on the 11th and 12th was the main event of February.  See snow time lapse at -

    The storm total was 12.5 inches from 1500 of the 11th until 0735 of the 12th or a 16.5 hour period. 
    It was the tenth greatest storm total in the last 26 years and the fourth greatest February snow in the last 26 years. 
    It also ranked eighth in the greatest 24 hour snow total in the last 26 years. 
    The total snowfall for February was 13.3 inches and was +6.7 inches more than the 26-year average and only 
    five Februarys have had more snow. 
    The maximum temperature for the month of 67 °F came only four days after the snowstorm melting the snowfall quickly. 
    Otherwise it was a typical February and only broke 6 daily records.  
    The 11th, 12th and 19th were the dates of the most significant weather.
    February had 21 days with the temperature at or below freezing with 19 days being average. 
    The lowest temperature was 12°F on the 19th; this was the lowest February temperature recorded since 1996.  
    The 34 °F temperature range of the 25th was the most in February since 2002.
    The lowest wind chill (new Scale) for the month was -2.4 °F on the 19th which was the lowest wind chill
    since wind chill records were started here in 2003.
    The maximum gust of 37 mph from the WSW on the 17th at 1059 was associated with a cold front bringing
     in the cold air mass that gave the month's lowest temperature on the 19th.
    The minimum barometer reading of 29.26 inches on the 4th was the lowest minimum pressure recorded in
    February since 2003 when 29.09 inches was recorded.

    The snowfall total today was 7.9 inches, a new 26 year MAXIMUM snowfall record for the date; the old record was only 0.2 inches in 1993. The storm total was 12.5 inches from 1500 of the 11th until 0735 of the 12th or a 16.5 hour period. It was the tenth greatest storm total in the last 26 years. It was the fourth greatest February snow in the last 26 years. It was the eighth greatest 24 hour snow total in the last 26 years.

MARCH
    MARCH 2006 SUMMARY
     March was the driest March on record in the past 26-years with only 1.3 % of the average monthly precipitation 
    and 2.2 °F above the average mean monthly temperature.
     The average March mean temperature was 47.0 °F which was the 6th highest in the past 26 years.
    The March rainfall had a -4.28 inch departure with only 3 days having measurable precipitation tying the 1981 record. 
    March was not only the driest March but also tied the record of the driest month in the last 26 years with October 2000. 
    No measurable precipitation occurred in Annandale for 18 days from March 3rd through March 20th. 
    This is now the longest period without measurable precipitation since 2001 when the 26-year record was 
    set of 34 days from Oct. 17th - Nov. 19th.
    The highest temperature was 86 °F on the 13th that was the highest temperature recorded in March since 1998
     when the 26-year record of 90 °F was set.  
    The daily mean temperature for the 13th was 69.0 degrees F and was the highest daily mean for March since 
    March 28, 1991 when 72 °F was recorded.
    The average daily temperature range of 21.7 °F for March was the 3rd highest on record. Only the 22.4°F in 1988 
    and the record of 23.6 °F set in 1986 were higher. 
    The least daily temperature range during March was 10 °F that occurred on the 21st which is now the 26-year record.
    The total snowfall for March was 0.2 inches and was -2.6 inches less than the 26-year average which is 2.8 inches. 
    The maximum wind gust of 43 mph from the WNW on the 15th at 1020 was the 8th strongest wind gust recorded 
    for March in the past 26 years.

APRIL
    APRIL 2006 SUMMARY
    April was +3.4 °F warmer than average and +0.90 inches above average in precipitation but
    the year’s total is still -3.91 inches below average chiefly because of the very dry March.
    April’s mean monthly temperature was 58.78 °F and was the fourth warmest in the last 26 years 
    and the warmest April since  2002.  
    It was interesting that the highest temperature for the month was only 82 °F which was a -3.0 °F 
    departure and the lowest in April since 2000.  
    The greatest daily temperature range during April was only 33 °F and the least since 1998. 
    It is also interesting that the lowest daily temperature range was 12 degrees F which was the
    third highest in the last 26 years with 14 °F being the record in 2002.
    April had 12 days with measurable precipitation but 2.31 inches or 52% of the month’s rain fell
    on the 22nd which was the second most rainfall on an April day since April 15, 1983 when the 26 
    year April record of 2.57 inches occurred. 
    Also on the 22nd we had 1.10 inches of rainfall in one hour which set a new record of the most
    rain to fall in a one hour period in April; the old record was 0.86 inches in 1998 
    (rainfall intensity records since 1991).
    The lowest wind chill (new scale) for April was 25.7 °F on the 9th at 0555.
    The lowest relative humidity for April was 19% on the 20th at 1656.
    The maximum wind gust of 38 mph from the west was recorded on the 3rd at 1906.
    There were only three days with thunder and no hail or heavy fogs.
    The only frozen precipitation occurred on the 5th when a mix of rain and snow occurred 
    between 0744 and 0750. 
    The last measurable snow to occur in April was 1.0 inch on April 9, 2000.

MAY
    MAY 2006 SUMMARY
     May 2006
    May was the fourth driest May in the last 26 years and near average in temperature.   
    The mean temperature (64.6° F) was only a negative 0.1° F below the average.  
    Most of May was cool until the last week when summer-like temperatures brought May 
    back to near the average. 
    The record maximum temperature of 96° F on the 30th was the second highest temperature 
    recorded in May in the last 26 years. 
    The highest was on May 20, 1996 when a 97 °F temperature was recorded. 
    The highest mean temperature for May was on the 30th and was 81.5°F. 
    Only three times in the last 26 years has a higher daily mean temperature been recorded. 
    May had three days above 90°F and only three years in the last 26 had more (1991,1998,2000). 
    The highest minimum temperature for May was 69°F on the 31st which was the fourth 
    highest in the last 26 years for the month of May. 
    The average daily temperature range for May was 21.9°F that was the highest since May 2002.
    The May rainfall had a -2.38 inch departure and the driest since 1999 when 1.42 inches occurred. 
    The driest May in the last 26 years was 1.05 inches in 1986.  
    The greatest precipitation amount in a day was only 0.64 inches on the 11th which was the 
    least recorded in May since 1994 and the second least in the last 26 years for May.
    The maximum gust of 31 mph on the 21st and was the highest in May since 2003. 
    The average daily high wind gust was 17.2 mph; only last year was higher since these 
    records were started in 1999.  
    But the total wind run for the month was the least on record.

    SPRING SEASON-
    
    The mean spring temperature was 56.8°F with a + 1.9 °F departure the highest since 
    2000 and only four springs were warmer in the last 26-years.
    The total precipitation was only 6.43 inches with a – 5.76 inch departure the driest since 1986 and the second driest in the last 26 years.
    There were 24 days this spring with precipitation. In the last 26 springs, there have been none with less precipitation days.

JUNE
    JUNE 2006 SUMMARY
     June with 14.38 inches of rain, +10.79 inch departure, was the wettest June on record 
    and the wettest month on record here. 
    The previous record was September 1999 with 11.33 inches which isn't even close.
     (Records since 1979)  
    It was also just a little warmer than average with a monthly mean temperature of 74.1° F 
    which was only a +0.6° F departure.  
    The highest maximum temperature for June was 95° F on the 18th and the lowest 
    maximum temperature was 74° F on the 14th.  The 74° F tied the 26-year record set in 1994.
        June had many precipitation records. - - - 
    The precipitation total on June 25th was 5.31 inches, a new 25 year MAXIMUM precipitation
     record for a day. 
    The old record was ONLY 3.86 inches on October 8, 2005.  From 2030 of the 24th until 0130
     of the 25th some of the worst electrical storm cells ever observed occurred at this station. 
    Two strikes were very close with one hitting a tall tulip popular tree just 80 to 100 feet to our
     south and the other hit a smaller tulip popular tree about 250 feet to our NNE.  
    June had 10 days with thunder; the record for June is 11 in 1998. (Records since 1995)  
    The maximum one hour rainfall intensity was 2.35 inches on the 25th which shattered the 
    previous record not only for June but for any month.
    The previous 26-year record was 1.74 inches on July 28, 2000.   
    The storm total of the 22nd - 28th was 12.10 inches the most precipitation ever recorded 
    here in a storm in the last 26 years; 
    the old record was October 6th - 8th of 2005 when 7.09 inches occurred. 
    We were lucky in a sense that 2006 was dry with a - 6.29 precipitation departure going into 
    June or even more flooding would have been experienced. 
    Currently the 2006 precipitation surplus is +4.50 inches. The maximum rain in 24-hour period 
    was 5.61 inches from 5 AM on June 25th to 5 AM of the 26th. 
    This was very near the record of 5.66 inches set on October 7th and 8th 2005.  
    It was also the first time that June or any month in the last 26 years had three days with
     more than 2.00 inches of rain and 5 days of an inch or more. 
    June had 13 days with measurable rainfall and only four Junes in the last 26-years had 
    more than thirteen. 
    The total precipitation for June was 14.38 inches which is the most recorded here in any 
    month in the last 26 years. 
         National Airport had 14.02 inches the most ever recorded for June; the previous record 
    was 11.53 inches in 1972 the month of remnants of Agnes. 
    To put this month total rainfall in perspective of the 135 years records (1620 months) in 
    Washington only four months have been wetter; the record was 17.45 inches in Sept 1934.

  • JUNE 01, 2006 New 26-Year Record HIGH Maximum Temperature for the Date
    The maximum temperature today was 93 °F, a new 26 year HIGH maximum temperature record for the date; the old record was 92 °F in 1989.
  • JUNE 16, 2006 New 26-Year Record HIGH Temperature Range for the Date
    The temperature range today was 29 °F, a new 26 year HIGH temperature range record for the date; the old record was 26 °F in 1998.
  • JUNE 18, 2006 New 26-Year Record HIGH Maximum Temperature for the Date
    The maximum temperature today was 95 °F, a new 26 year HIGH maximum temperature record for the date; the old record was 92 °F in 1994.
  • JUNE 19, 2006 New 26-Year Record Precipitation Amount for the Date
    The precipitation total today was 1.63 inches, a new 26 year MAXIMUM precipitation record for the date; the old record was 0.41 inches in 1992.
    It is also the most rain since April 22, 2006 when 2.31 inches was recorded.

    The precipitation total today was 2.01 inches, a new 26 year MAXIMUM precipitation record for the date; the old record was 1.55 inches in 1998.
    It was also one of the most intense one hour rainfall amounts with 1.64 inches falling in a one hour period the record is 1.74 inches in one hour on July 28, 2000.

  • JUNE 25, 2006 New 26-Year Record Precipitation Amount for the Date
    The precipitation total today was 5.31 inches, a new 26 year MAXIMUM precipitation record for the date; the old record was 1.03 inches in 1992.
    Total rainfall for June 25th was 5.31 inches the greatest rainfall in 26 years for any calendar day.
    From 2030 of the 24th until 0130 of the 25th some of the worst electrical storm cells ever observed occurred at this station.
    Two strikes were very close with one hitting a tall tulip poplar tree just 80 to 100 feet to our southeast and the other hit a smaller tulip popular tree about 250 feet to our NNE.
    The 24-hour total was also the second greatest on record. (The previous record was 5.66 inches on October 7-8 of 2005.)
    The 2.35 inches of rain that fell in a one hour period tonight is also a new 26-year record at this station.

JULY
    JULY SUMMARY
     July was hot and a little wetter than average.  
    July’s average temperature (79.9 °F) was the fourth hottest on record in the last
     26 years with a +2.1 °F departure.  
    The 5.14 inches of rain made it the tenth wettest July in the last 26-years with a 
    +0.86 inch departure. July had only 9 days with measurable rainfall the least 
    since 2002.  
    Two-thirds of the month’s rainfall occurred in the first six days of July and ended
     the wettest 15 days ever recorded at this station. 
    From June 22nd to July 6th a total of 15.52 inches of rain occurred averaging 
    more than one inch a day over one-half of a summer month period, amazing! 
    I lost two tomato plants as they were too wet and their roots rotted which was
     also a lifetime first for me. 
    The 0.36 inches of rain that occurred in five minutes on the 2nd was the most
     intense rainfall in July since 2003 and only three Julys have had more intense
     five minute rainfalls in the last 16 years. 
          July had 18 days with 90 °F or above temperatures which is the most for 
    July since 2002 when we had 20 days with 22 days being the 26-year record.  
            July’s average daily temperature range was 18.9 °F the most since 2002. 
    The least daily temperature range was 10 °F on the 14th which is highest 
    recorded for July since 1998. 
          The maximum gust of 32 mph from the west on the 22nd at 1929 was 
    the strongest wind gust recorded for July since 2003 when 36 mph was 
    recorded. 
    But there was very little wind during the month as the wind run total for 
    July was only 385.2 miles which was only about 56 percent of the lowest
     on record. (Wind Run records since 2002)

AUGUST
    AUGUST 2006 SUMMARY
    August was humid, warmer and much drier than average with only four days with measurable rain. 
    Only one other year in the last 26 years had four days or less which was 1995.  
    It was the driest August since 1998. Only 1989 with 0.38 inches and 1998 with 0.81 inches were drier.
    The August mean average temperature was 77.8 °F that was a +2.3 °F departure and made it the 6th 
    warmest in the last 26 years. 
    The 1.00 inch of rain for August was a -2.39 inch departure.  
    The high humidity and high dew point temperatures made August feel warmer than it really was.  
    The highest dew point here occurred on the 7th and was a new record for August, however, 
    dew point records were recorded here only since 2003.
    The highest temperature for the year here was 98 °F on August 3rd.  
    This was the highest temperature recorded here since July 27th 2005. The 78 °F minimum temperature 
    on the 2nd and 3rd was the highest ever recorded in August in the last 26 years. 
    The 88 °F daily mean temperature on the 3rd was also the highest ever recorded in August in the 
    last 26 years. 
    The maximum wind gust was only 22 mph from the east that occurred on the 31st at 2214 preceding 
    the approach of tropical storm Ernesto.  
    The month’s total wind run was 512.8 miles which was the second lowest wind run for August in the 
    last five years since wind run records were started at this station.
    The average temperature for the summer season of June, July, and August was 77.3°F for a +1.7 °F 
    departure. 
    This was the third warmest summer in the last 26 years. 
    Only 2002 with a record average of 78.0 °F and in 2nd place 77.6 °F that occurred in 2005 were higher. 
    But the summer was the wettest in the last 26 years with a total of 20.52 inches which is a departure 
    of +9.29 inches for the season. 
    The previous 26-year record was 17.19 inches in 2000.  
    This record was a result of June’s 14.38 inches which was the wettest month we have ever had at this station.

SEPTEMBER
    SEPTEMBER 2006 SUMMARY
    September was cool and much wetter than average and the cloudiest since 1989.  
    In the last 26 years only five Septembers have been wetter.  
    The 6.92 inches of rain for September was a +2.85 inch departure.  
    The September rainfall was skewed toward the first of the month with 4.63 inches 
    or 68% of the month's rainfall in the first five days. 
    September's average sky cover made it the second cloudiest September in the last
     26 years; the cloudiest was 1989. 
    After this wet period, from the 16th to the 27th we had no measurable rainfall 
    for a 12 day period.  
    This year has given our area the most extreme distribution of precipitation I can
     ever remember.  
    It has been either too wet or too dry for the most part!
    September's mean average temperature was 65.6 °F which was a departure of -2.3 °F. 
    This September was the coolest since 2001 and the fourth coolest September 
    in the last 26 years. 
    But due to the cloudiness the average maximum temperature was the second lowest
     on record; only 1992 was cooler.  
    September also had the greatest negative temperature departure so far this year. 
    September's average temperature range was only 14.2 °F the second from the least 
    in the last 26 years due to the cloudiness and humid conditions of this September.  
    The greatest daily temperature range for any September day was only 20 °F which 
    sets a new 26-year record for the lowest maximum daily temperature range for September.
    The maximum wind gust of 38 mph from the WNW on the 28th at 1754 during a 
    thunderstorm was the second highest wind ever recorded here in the last 26 years
     in the month of September. 
    Only September 2003 was greatest due to Isabel.  
    The thunderstorm on the 28th also gave 0.39 inches of rain in five minutes which 
    was the second most intense five minute rainfall ever recorded in September.

OCTOBER
    OCTOBER 2006 SUMMARY
    October with 5.44 inches of rain, +1.90 inch departure, was the seventh wettest October on record.  
    October had 12 days with measurable rainfall; only three Octobers in the last 26 years have had 
    more days with measurable precipitation with 14 days being the record.  
    Last year was the wettest October on record. 
    It was also cooler than average with a monthly mean temperature of 54.9 °F which was a -1.2 °F 
    departure, the ninth coolest October in the last 27 years and the coolest here since 2003.  
    The average temperature range was 17.1 °F the highest average for October since 2001.
    October’s average cloud cover was near the average but still the clearest since 2001.
    The maximum wind gust of 39 mph from the WNW which occurred on the 20th at 1256 associated 
    with a cold frontal passage tied for the highest wind recorded here in October in the last 26 years. 
    A wind gust of 38 mph was recorded here on the 28th but gusts to 70 mph were recorded in 
    New England.
    October was the second windiest here in the past five years.
    The lowest barometer was 29.25 inches on the 28th which was associated with a deep low pressure   
    in Quebec and was the lowest pressure ever recorded at this station in October and was a strong 
    storm in the NE United States.

NOVEMBER
    NOVEMBER 2006 SUMMARY
    November 2006
    November was the wettest November on record with a departure of +2.62 inches. (Records since 1979)  
    It was also the first time since 1987 that November had three days that the rainfall amounts for the day 
    were equal to or greater than one inch.  
    The only frozen precipitation was a trace of sleet on the 22nd.  
    The 0.30 inches of precipitation that occurred on the 16th in a five minute period was a new record 
    precipitation intensity record for November.  (Precipitation intensity records since 1991)
    It was also warmer than average with a monthly mean temperature of 49.9° F, a +2.8 °F departure.  
    In the last 26 years only six Novembers have been warmer. 
    The month had only 5 days with a minimum temperature of 32 °F or less. 
    The average is almost 9 days.            
    The highest temperature for November was 76 °F on the 11th and only four years out of the last 26 years
     have had a higher November maximum reading.  
    The average daily temperature range was 16.4 °F the least since November 2002 when 15.0 °F was recorded; 
    the average is 17.6 °F. 
    Lower temperature ranges are often the result of cloudiness and higher humidity. 
    This November was the cloudiest since 1997 and had the highest average relative humidity since 1997.
    The maximum wind gust was only 29 mph from the SSE on the 16th at 1228 the least since 1991 and 
    the second lowest maximum wind speed recorded for November.  
    The total wind run for November 969.8 miles was also the lowest on record.  (Wind run records since 2002)   
    The lowest barometer for the month was only 29.42 inches on the 8th & 16th which was the highest

    The December mean monthly temperature of 43.5 °F was a departure of + 5.8 °F and the third 
    warmest December in the past 26 years and the warmest since 1984. 
    There were only ten days the minimum temperature equaled or fell below freezing. 
    In the last 26 years, no year has had less, and only 1998 equaled this value.  
    The average daily temperature range was 18.4 °F which was the highest since 1985 and the 
    third highest in the past 26 years.
    The precipitation total was 1.84 inches a departure of - 1.43 inches and the seventh driest in 
    the last 26 years and the driest since 2001.  
    But for the year, we had a surplus of + 8.91 inches of precipitation and a total of 53.30 inches 
    for the year with only three years being wetter in the last 26 years. 
    The snowfall total for December was only a trace from a snow flurry on December 7th. 
    This was the first year in the last 26 years that only a trace of snow was recorded for both 
    January and December.  
    The snowfall total for 2006 was only 13.5 inches which was a departure of - 7.9 inches.
    The highest temperature recorded for the month was 73 °F on the 1st. 
    Only four Decembers in the last 26 years have had a monthly maximum temperature higher.  
    Also the 67 °F dew point on the 1st was the record highest dew point recorded for December.
    The lowest temperature recorded for the month was 16 °F on the 9th which was + 2 °F above 
    the average lowest monthly minimum for December.
    The maximum wind gust for December was 39 mph from the west at 0955 on the 27th which 
    is average. 
    But the total wind run for the month was 1281.5 miles the lowest on record for December, 
    as well as, both the daily average and daily maximum wind run for December. (Records since 2002)
    The month's maximum barometer reading of 30.61 inches on the 29th wasn't unusual but the 
    month's average barometric pressure of 30.21 inches was the highest since 2000.

    It was also the first time in the last 26 years that a snow flurry occurred on this date.
