THE YEAR 2005
January was very warm up to the 14th and even though the second half was cold the average
departure for the month was +0.8° F the warmest since 2002. The precipitation was also above
average with a +0.42 inch departure. The lowest temperature was 7°F on the 24th and the highest
was 68° F on the 4th.
The daily temperature range of 32 °F on the 14th was the highest maximum daily temperature
range in January since 2000 when it was also 32° F for the daily temperature range.
The January rainfall total was 3.76 inches from 12 days with precipitation also the most
since 2000. The 2.08 inches of rain recorded on the 14th was the largest precipitation total
in a calendar day for January since January 11, 1991 when 2.25 inches was recorded which is
still the record for January.
The 2.37 inches in 24 hours on January 13th - 14th though sets a new 25-year twenty-four hour
precipitation amount for January.
The total snowfall for January was 8.1 inches which was exactly equal to the 25-year
average. There were 9 days with measurable snow or flurries and 6 days with measurable snow
but most in one day was 3.0 inches .
January 23rd was an unusually cold disagreeable day. The maximum temperature
was 21° F the second lowest maximum temperature for the date in the last 25-years. It also
had a 37 mph wind gust and the lowest wind chill (new Scale) for the winter of -9.7° F at 0701.
It is also the lowest wind chill recorded at this station since wind chill records were
started in 2001. The wind run was 181.3 miles that was the highest wind run since 4-4-2004.
The high wind gust of 37 mph from the WSW on the 23rd at 0245 was the strongest wind
gust recorded this month.
The maximum barometer reading of 30.85 inches on the 28th was the highest recorded
since 3-10-1996 when 30.91 inches was recorded. The lowest barometer reading for the month
was only 29.64 on the 26th. This was the highest monthly minimum barometer reading since
1984 when 29.67 inches was recorded. The average barometer pressure for the month was
30.23 inches which was the highest since 1991.
It is also interesting that January was the cloudiest January since 1996 and the
second cloudiest January in the last 24 years yet the atmospheric pressure averaged
the highest since 1991.

February was drier and warmer than average.
The snowfall was 10.7 inches or 4.3 inches above the average.
Last February had only 0.1 inches of frozen precipitation occurring as sleet.
This is the most snow in February since 2003 when the 30.9 inches occurred
setting the 25 year record.
The 2.05 inches of precipitation for February was a departure of - 0.99
inches from the average. This was the least precipitation for February
since 2002.
The mean temperature departure for the month was + 0.6° F.
The lowest temperature was 16°F on the 19th.
The highest maximum temperature in February was 64°F on the 16th that
set the 25-year record high maximum temperature for the date.
February had 19 days with the minimum temperature at or below freezing
that is the least since 2002 that had 18 days.
The 10.7 inches of snow in February was the sixth snowiest February
in the last 26 Februarys and the 5.0 inches of snow on the 24th was
the tenth largest snow in February in the last 25-years and a 25-year
record snowfall for the date.
The maximum gust of 41 mph from the WNW on the 10th at 1700 was the
strongest wind gust recorded for the month.
The minimum barometer reading of 29.54 inches on the 28th was the
highest minimum barometer recorded in February since 2002 when 29.59
inches was recorded.
The winter season’s (Dec. - Feb.) precipitation was 8.91 inches a
departure of only -0.39 inches and was the eleventh driest winter in
the past 26 winters.
Average is 9.30 inches with 15.74 inches as the extreme maximum and
3.63 inches as the extreme minimum.
The winter season (Dec. - Feb.) mean temperature was 37.0° F the
departure of + 0.6° F and was the tenth warmest of the past 26-winters.
Average is 36.4° F with 41.8° F the extreme maximum and 31.7° F as the
26-year minimum.

March was above average in precipitation and much below average in temperature.
March’s mean monthly temperature was -3.5° F cooler than the average and the
coolest March since 1996 which was the twenty-five record.
March was also the fourth coldest in the last twenty-five years.
The March rainfall of 4.61 inches was a +0.28 inch departure and the wettest
March since 2001 when the total was 4.69 inches.
March was cloudier than average and the cloudiest since 1994.
March had 17 days with the temperature at or below freezing which was the most
ever recorded in the last 25 years except for 1996 which set the record of 19 days.
The lowest temperature was 16°F on the 9th which was three degrees below the
average low minimum temperature for March.
The 71°F maximum temperature (the highest of 2005) on the 7th fell to the minimum
of 16°F the (lowest of the month) on the 9th which was spring back to winter in
40 hours and 50 minutes.
The temperature change from the 71° F maximum of the 7th to the 22°F minimum
of the 8th at midnight was 49° F.
Only three cold fronts in the last 25 years have topped this CHANGE in temperature.
The 25 year record is a 52°F drop from 62°F Feb. 11, 1981 to a min. of 10°F on the 12th.
The other two were: 50°F drop from 45° F Jan. 19, 1985 to a min. of -5° F on the 20th.
50°F drop from 81° F Mar. 18, 1989 to a min. of 31° F on the 19th.
The greatest 24 hour temperature range for March was 37° F on the 8th which was
the highest temperature range in March since 1997.
The first thunderstorm of 2005 on the 20th was accompanied by very small hail
of around one-eight in diameter.
The total snowfall for March was 2.2 inches the most since 1999.
The lowest wind chill (new Scale) for March was +5 ° F on the 9th.
The high wind gust of 45 mph from the west on the 8th at 1751 was the
strongest in March since 1999.
The 220 mile wind run on the 2nd was the highest wind run for any day since
wind run records were started here in May of 2002.
The barometer also fell to 29.16 inches on the 8th which was the lowest reading
since 02-23-2003 when the pressure fell to 29.09 inches and the lowest in March since 1996.

MARCH 07, 2005 Warmest Day of the Year but Still Not a Record for the Date
The 71° F maximum today is the highest maximum temperature here since 10-31-2004 when it was also 75° F.
MARCH 08, 2005 STRONG Cold Front Gave a Great Temperature Range and 2.2 inches of snow.
The temperature range today was 37°F, a new 25 year MAXIMUM temperature range record for the date; the old record was 33°F in 1995.
The Maximum wind gust today was 45 mph gust from the west that occurred at 1751 hours.
The temperature dropped 49°F from the 71°F maximum on the 7th to the 22°F minimum of the 8th.
Only three cold fronts in the last 25 years have topped this CHANGE in temperature.
The 25 year record is a 52°F drop from 62°F Feb. 11,1981 to a minimum of 10°F on the 12th.

APRIL
April was warmer and wetter, windier than average, and had skies that were a little clearer than average.
April’s mean monthly temperature was + 1.0 ° F warmer than the 25 year average. average.
The mean monthly temperature was 56.4° F which was the highest since 2002.
The lowest minimum temperature was 33°F on the 16th which made this April the first April since 1999
not having a day with the temperature freezing or below.
The lowest monthly maximum temperature was only 51° F, the highest since 1998, when 53° F was recorded.
April rainfall of 4.53 inches was the fifth wettest April in the last 25 years with a +1.03 inch
departure from the average. Last year April was the fourth wettest.
It was the first time since 1990 we had two days in April with more than one inch of rain and both
set new 25-year records for the date.
The 1.81 inches of rain that fell in 24 hours on the 1st and 2nd was the greatest 24-hour rain since
2.25 inches was recorded in 2000.
The 1.68 inches of rain on the 2nd was also the most on a calendar day in April since 2000 and was
the third greatest daily rain in April in the last 25 years.
But April’s skies were clearer than average and had an average daily temperature range of 22.7° F
the highest since 1995.
The average ground temperature at one foot was 52.5° F which was the highest in April since 2002.
The lowest barometer reading of 29.21 inches on the second was the lowest barometer reading in
April since 1982 when a reading of 29.17 inches was recorded.
The average barometer reading for the month was 29.94 inches the lowest since 1998 when 29.93
inches was the monthly average.
The lowest relative humidity for April of 16% on the 17th was the lowest recorded in April since 2003.
The maximum gust of 40 mph from the west on the 3rd at 0940 was the sixth strongest wind gust recorded
for April in the past 25 years.
Wind run records have been kept for only the last three years but this April had the highest wind run
total for the month.

MAY
May was windy and the third coolest and the tenth wettest in the last 25 years.
The mean temperature (61.2°F) was – 3.6° F below the average; only 1994 and 2003
were cooler in the last 25 years.
May’s highest minimum temperature was only 62° F on May 15th which was the second
lowest high monthly minimum every recorded for May.
The record was 61° F in 1994 (No warm nights).
The lowest temperature in May was 37° F on the 3rd that tied for the 3rd lowest
temperature on record in May in the past 25 years.
Both other occasions when the temperature was lower it was only one degree lower.
Also the highest daily mean temperature for May was 71.0 on the 11th which is the
lowest on record in the last 25 years.
The old record was 72.5° F in 1992.
The May rainfall had a + 0.61 inch departure and the wettest since 2003.
The 2.56 inches of rain on the 20th was the second greatest daily rain in May in
the past 25 years and the 17th greatest daily rain in the past 25 years.
The 24 hour rain total of 2.65 inches was the 15th greatest on record at Annandale
– Barcroft Hills Weather Center.
On the 14th 0.32 inches of rain fell in five minutes; only one rain in May since
1991 was more intense.
In 1995 0.38 inches occurred in five minutes.
Also on the 14th storm one lightning strike hit a tree just 2 houses down giving
a popping sound and splitting the bark of the tree.
The maximum gust of 28 mph on the 1st and 14th tied for the 5th lowest
maximum wind gust recorded for May in the last 25 years.
But May’s wind run was the highest on record (records since 2002) since many days
had a maximum wind gust in the high teens or low twenties.
The average daily high wind gust was 18.1 mph the highest on record (records since 1999).
The 17% relative humidity was the lowest recorded in May since
1997 when 16% was recorded.
The maximum barometer of 30.58 inches on May 5th was the highest for May since 2001.

June was warm and for the most part dry ( only 0.09 inches of rain occurred
from June 14th to 28th a 15 day period) except for the 29th and 30th.
June’s mean average temperature (75.4°F) was the third hottest on record
with a +1.9° F departure from average.
The 3.29 inches of rain was a little below average but without the rainfall
of the 29th, June would have been the fourth driest on record in the last
25 years.
The most rain in a calendar day was 1.68 inches on the 29th when 0.53 inches
of rain fell in only 5 minutes.
This was the most rainfall in a 5 minute period since June 15, 1998 when
0.56 inches rain fell in 5 minutes.
A total of 1.50 inches was recorded in one hour in this same storm.
This sets a new record for the most rain to occur in one hour’s time in
the month of June since rainfall intensity records were started in 1991.
The old record was 1.41 inches on June 8, 1992.
It was the driest June since 2002.
June was also the clearest June since 2002.
June had 13 days with 90°F or above temperatures which ties the old 25 year
record set in 1994.
June’s highest maximum temperature was 95° F on June 28th which was the
highest June monthly maximum since June 2002.
June’s average temperature range was only 20.7° F and highest daily

JULY
July was both hot and wet but was wetter than hot.
It was the seventh hottest July in the last 25 years and the warmest since 2002
and was the fourth wettest July here in the last 25 years.
Most months that are hot are often dry but this July being the exception with
the added moisture and high dew points made the heat more uncomfortable.
The lowest daily maximum temperature for the month was only 78° F. which was the
highest recorded in July since 1995 when the 25 year record was set at 82° F;
the average is only 72.5° F.
The lowest daily mean temperature for July was 73.5° F on the 8th which was the
highest ever recorded here in July in the last 25 years; the previous record was
71.5°F in July 1994.
The average mean temperature was 79.32 degrees, a departure of +1.6° F.
We had 15 days equal to or above 90° F and 2 days equal to or above 95° F.
Only 1980, 1988, 1995, 1999 have had a higher maximum temperature reading for
July in the last 25 years than this July's 98° F recorded on the 27th.
We had 13 days with measurable precipitation that was the sixth greatest number
of days with measurable rain in July.
The 25-year maximum record is 17 that occurred in July of 1994. There were 10
days with thunder which tied the July record for the most days with thunder
since these records were started in 1995.
The rainfall for July was 6.20 inches which was a surplus for July of 1.99 inches.
The 2.50 inches of rain from Cindy on the 8th was the most rain in a calendar
day since Feb. 22, 2003 when 2.78 inches occurred.
It was also the most rain in a July calendar day since July 4, 1981 when 3.25
inches occurred.
The 2.94 inches on the 7th and 8th was also the most in a 24 hour period since
Feb. 21-22, 2003 when 3.07 inches occurred and the most in a 24 hour period in
July since July 4, 1981.
It was also the cloudiest July on my records but the wet July of 2003 was nearly
as cloudy and was the previous record.

The rainfall storm total for the tropical storm Cindy was 2.94 inches with 0.44 on the 7th and 2.50 on the 8th.
The precipitation total today is 2.50 inches, a new 25 year MAXIMUM precipitation record for the date; the old record was only 0.099 inches in 1992.
It was also the most rain in a calendar day since Feb. 22, 2003 when 2.78 inches occurred.
It was also the most rain in a JULY calendar day since July 4, 1981 when 3.25 inches occurred.

August was the fourth hottest and seventh driest in the last 25-years.
August’s mean average temperature was (78.2° F) that was a +2.8 ° F departure and
the highest positive departure for the year and the warmest since 2002.
The average relative humidity this August was five percent higher than August 2002
adding to the discomfort of the heat.
Six months this year so far have had positive departures.
August had 9 days with 90° F or above temperatures and last year August had but 2 days.
The total of equal to or greater than 90° F was 18 days for 2004 and so far2005 has had 37 days.
The 2.16 inches of rain for August was a -1.28 inch departure and the driest since 1998.
August had only 6 days with measurable rain and only 4 times in the last 25-years has
August had less days with precipitation.
This was the least in August since 1998 when 5 days was recorded.
It was the first August since 2000 that no rainfall amounts of 1.00 inch or more occurred
in the month.
August also had only 3 days with thunder observed the least since 1998.
August’s average sky cover was the clearest for August since 2002 and clearest month
of 2005 by a small margin.
August’s average temperature range was only 16.9° F the most since August 2002.
The maximum wind gust of 26 mph from the WSW occurred on the 31st at 1808 after the
western passage of Katrina.
The lowest barometer reading was 29.57 inches which occurred on the 31st and was also
the result of Katrina.
This is the lowest barometer reading for August since 1992 when 29.55 inches was observed.
The average temperature for the summer season of June, July, and August was 77.6°F for a
+2.1° F departure.
This was the second warmest on record in the last 25-years; only 2002 was hotter at 78.0° F.
But the summer was 0.58 inches above average in rainfall with a total of 11.65
inches for the season.
The 25- year average is 11.07 inches.

September was the driest on record here in the last 25 years with only 0.27 inches
of precipitation.
September was the driest in Washington DC in recorded history. (Records since 1871)
It was also very warm for September and the third warmest in the last 25 years, only
1980 and 1998 were warmer.
September only had three days with measurable rain the least in September in the
last 25 years.
The 0.27 inches of rain for September was a -3.95 inch departure.
Only two months in the last 312 months has the precipitation total for the month
been less than this September’s total.
September’s average sky cover made it the third clearest September in the last
25-years with only 1983 and 1985 being clearer.
Also with the clear skies and little rain the lowest relative humidity for September
was 19% the least recorded in September (records since 1980.)
September’s mean average temperature was 71.6°F which was a +3.9°F departure.
The maximum temperature for September was 88°F on the 15th and 23rd.
September’s average temperature range was 18.8°F the most in September since 1985
due to the clear skies of this month.
The maximum wind gust of only 25 mph from the north occurred on the 29th at 1500
and the wind run for the month was the lowest for September since wind run records
were started in 2002.
The highest barometer was 30.45 inches on the 6th which was the highest barometer

OCTOBER
October with 9.55 inches of rain, +4.06 inch departure, was the wettest October on record
and the second wettest month on record here; only September 1999 was wetter with 11.33 inches.

It was also warmer than average with a monthly mean temperature of 57.8° F which was a
+1.8° F departure, the fifth warmest October in the last 26-years and the warmest here since 1990.
The warmth of October wasn't really perceived because September was also so warm.

The precipitation total on October the 8th was 3.86 inches, a new 25 year MAXIMUM precipitation
record for the date; the old record was ONLY 1.55 inches in 1996. The storm total of the
6th, 7th, and 8th was 7.09 inches the most precipitation ever recorded here in a storm in the
last 25 years; the old record was November 27th -28th of 1993 when 4.95 inches occurred.
We were lucky in a sense that September was the driest month in the last 25-years before
such a heavy rain or more flooding would have been experienced.
The maximum rain in any one calendar day is now 3.86 inches set on October 8th. The old
record was 3.65 inches in Hurricane Floyd on September 16, 1999.
It was also the first time that October had two days with more than 2.00 inches of rain since 1995.
The maximum rain record for any 24-hour period was also broken; the old record was
3.97 inches in Hurricane Floyd on September 15-16, 1999.
The new record is now 5.66 inches on October 7th and 8th.
The maximum one hour rainfall intensity for October was 0.68 inches on the 8th and was the
most in October since 1996 when 0.91 inches was recorded in one hour.
Thirteen days had measurable rain; only 1993 had more days with measurable precipitation (14 days).
October’s average cloud cover was the second cloudiest October in the last 25-years with
only October 2002 being cloudier.
The maximum wind gust of 31 mph from the west occurred on the 16th at 1214 associated
with a deep low pressure near Maine and a high pressure building into our area.
The lowest barometer was 29.45 inches on the 25th which was associated with a
low pressure off the coast and the remnants of Wilma east of the low pressure.

The storm total of the 6th, 7th, and 8th was 7.09 inches the most precipitation ever recorded here in a storm in the last 25 years ; the old record was November 27,1993 and November 28,1993 when 4.95 inches occurred.
This storm total is now 2.14 inches more than the old record.
We were lucky in a sense that we were in a drought before such a heavy rain.
The maximum rain in any one calendar day was also broken; the old record was 3.65 inches in Hurricane Floyd on September 16, 1999.
The new record is 3.86 inches on October 8th.
The maximum rain record for any 24-hour period was also broken; the old record was 3.97 inches in Hurricane Floyd on September 15-16, 1999.
The new record is 5.66 inches on October 7th and 8th.
The total rainfall for October is now 7.09 inches and is already the most ever recorded in October in the last 25 years except in 1995 when October had a 8.04 inch record.
Today's maximum one hour intensity for October was 0.68 inches.
This is the most in October since October 18,1996 when 0.96 inches occurred in one hour.
Today's maximum five minute intensity was 0.17 inches.
This is the most in October since October 14,2003 when 0.19 inches occurred in five minutes.

NOVEMBER
November was warmer than average with a monthly mean temperature of 48.4° F a +1.3° F departure.
November was below average in rainfall for the month with a -1.71 inch departure.
In the last 25-years only six Novembers have been drier.
The 0.8 inches of snow on the 23rd was the first snow in November since 1996 when 0.9 inches
occurred and the seventh greatest calendar day snowfall for November in the last 25 years.
It was the driest November since 2001 when only 0.95 inches of precipitation was recorded.
November gave great differences in temperatures during the month.
The lowest temperature for November was 20° F on the 25th and only two years out of the last
25 years have had a lower November minimum reading with 18° F being the record.
The mean daily temperature for the 25th was 27.0° F and only two November days have been
colder in the last 25 years.
They were November 14th 1986 and November 21st 1987; they both averaged 26.0° F.
The lowest daily maximum for the month was 34° F also on the 25th. It was the lowest daily
maximum in November since 1996 when 32° F was recorded.
The highest temperature for November was 75° F on the 6th and only six years out of the last
25 years have had a higher November maximum reading.
The average daily temperature range was 19.9° F the most since November 2000 when 20.0° F was recorded.
The maximum wind gust of 40 mph from the west occurred on the 10th at 622 associated with
a low pressure and its associated cold front passage.
Only four Novembers in the last 25-years have had a higher wind gust recorded in the month.
The lowest barometer for the month was 29.21 inches on the 22nd and it was the lowest
reading since in November since 1972.
It was also the lowest barometer recorded since April 2, 2005 at Annandale Weather Center.

- DECEMBER 2005 SUMMARY
December was much below average in temperature and a little above average in precipitation.
The December mean temperature of 34.7 °F was a departure of -3.0 °F, the sixth coldest
December, and the precipitation departure was 0.23 inches.
For the year, we had a surplus of 2.58 inches of precipitation and a total of 46.88 inches
for the year.
The maximum, minimum and mean monthly average temperatures were all the lowest since the
year 2000 which was the second coldest December in the last 25 years.
Even though the month was cold, for the most part, there wasn’t any extreme cold like
last December 20th at 0813 when the wind chill was -13.1 °F.
The lowest wind chill this month was only +11.0 °F on the 20th at 0619.
The snowfall total for December was 7.4 inches, the most for December since 2003 and
a departure of 4.7 inches for the month and the fourth greatest amount of snow recorded
in December in the last 25 years.
The snowfall total for 2005 was 29.2 inches which was the most snowfall for a year since
2003 when 49.9 inches was recorded. This December had five days with measurable amounts of
frozen precipitation which tied the 25 year record.
The year 1989, the coldest December on recorded also had five days with measurable frozen
precipitation.
Measurable snow cover lay on the ground for 19 days the most since 1989 when 24 days were
recorded.
The lowest temperature recorded for the month was 14 °F and the highest monthly maximum
was only 58 °F which was the lowest monthly maximum since 2000.
The maximum wind gust was 37 mph from WNW at 1825 on the 2nd.
The maximum barometer reading of 30.74 inches on the 8th was the highest recorded for
December since 1993 when it was 30.80 inches although 2000 was close with a barometer
reading of 30.73 inches.
