January
  • January mean temperature of 34.1°F was near the average of 34.0° but the precipitation total of 2.83 inches was below the average. The departure was - 0.70 inches.
  • The highest maximum temperature of 56°F was the lowest maximum temperature in January since 1994 when 56° was also recorded but 55°F is the 21 year record.
  • There were only five days of 50°F or higher temperatures in January the least since 1994.
  • The highest minimum temperature of 38°F was the lowest since 1995 but the lowest minimum was only 16° which was the highest since 1993.
  • It was the cloudiest January since 1998 though this January had only eight days with precipitation, the least since 1992.
  • The total snowfall for January was only 4.2 inches which was much below the average of 8.4 inches.

    The snow started around 0830 and ended at 1015 then started again around 1145 and ended at 1315. The total accumulation was 1.2 inches. The amount of moisture in the snow was low. The melted amount was 0.08 inches. The ratio of snow to water was about 15:1. The last measurable snow was 12-19-2000 when we had 3.8 inches.

  • January 11,   2001 -- Warmer
    The maximum temperature today was 56.1°F the warmest day since December 17, 2000. It was also the warmest ever for the date in the last 21 years here. The old record was 55°F recorded last year.
  • January 15,   2001 -- Warmer
    This morning minimum temperature was 37.8°F the first minimum temperature above freezing since December 8, 2000, thus 37 consecutive days that the temperature fell below freezing!
  • January 20-21,   2001 -- Snow
    The snow started around 0830 and ended at 0430 on the 21st. The total accumulation was 3.0 inches. The melted amount was 0.30 inches. The ratio of snow to water was about 10:1 however there was a little (<0.03) moisture from sleet before the snowfall started that was included in the 0.30 inches of melted precipitation.

February
  • February was warmer and drier than average. The mean temperature was 39.3° a +1.8° departure for February.
  • The total precipitation was 1.96 inches, departure. -1.03 inches the least since 1995 and only four of the last 21 years were drier.
  • The total snowfall was 3.3 inches the most since 1997 but still a negative departure of -2.5 inches.
  • The most unusual occurrence --- no really deep low pressures in the month of February; the lowest pressure was 29.72 inches on the 10th. The old record was 29.66 inches in 1978.
  • I have had a barograph since 1960 with the earlier records from a Rockingham Co. station and thus this may be at least a 41 year record high minimum pressure for the month of February.
  • The February average barometric pressure was 30.24 the highest since 1989.
  • Only two Februarys in the last 21 years have had more clear skies.
  • The 2° temperature range for February 16th was the lowest temperature range ever recorded (21yrs. records) at this station.

  • February 5, 2001 Light Snow
    - Snow started at 815 mixed with rain but became all snow after 0.40 inches of rain. Periods of heavy snow and very large flakes let the snow accumulate to a maximum depth of 0.8 inches even though the temperature never fell below freezing at the surface.

  • February 9, 2001 WARM
    Warmest night since November 27, 2000. The minimum last night was 41.5°F and the minimum on November 27 was also 42°F.
    The maximum today was 70°F which was a new record for the date here (records since 1979) and a record for Washington, DC (records since 1878).
    It was the warmest day since November 3, 2000 when it was also 70°F.
  • February 10, 2001 Windy and Colder
    The maximum today was 62.5°F which occurred at 0101, a new record for the date here (records since 1979) the old record was 61°F in 1990.
    The maximum wind gust was 38 mph that occurred at 0640. This is the highest wind gust since January 27, 2001.
  • February 22, 2001 Snow
    - Snow started at 1048 with a snow to water ratio higher than 10 to 1 but ended up 8.3 to 1. Total snowfall was only 2.5 inches here with a liquid content of 0.30 inches. It was still the largest snow in February since 2-8-97. Heaviest snow fall rate was around 1130 and snow pellets observed around 1330.

March
  • March was the first month in the last 5 that had above normal precipatation.
  • March was cold with a -2.7 mean temperature departure.
  • March had 15 days with 32° or below temperatures which was the most since 1996.
  • The highest temperature for the month was 64° on the 11th and 24th which was a new 21 year record low maximum temperature for March. The old record was 67° in 1984 thus it was the first time in over 21 years that March didn't have a 65°F day.
  • On March 6th both the maximum and minimum were 21 year record lows for the date.
  • The highest barometer pressure for month was 30.52 inches which was lowest maximum barometer for March since March 1992.
  • The influencing weather feature that was predominant for month was low pressures. On 16 days low pressure was the influencing weather factor which tied a 15 year record.
  • On March 26th the maximum was 12°F below the 21 year record maximum for the date.
  • On March 27th the minimum was 5°F below the 21 year record minimum for the date and it has never been any colder for so late in the spring.

  • March 20-21, 2001 Coastal Low Pressure-The rain started at 1950 on the 20th and 0.27 was recorded by midnight. By noon on the 21st the maximum wind gust was 33 mph at 1114 and the total rain in the storm was 1.23 inches. The max. pressure drop in one hour was 0.06 inches at 0218. The total pressure drop since midnight was 0.42 inches. Total rainfall for this storm by midnight was 1.38 inches which was the most rain since 1.75 inches on January 18th and 19th, 2001.
  • March 29-30th, 2001 Heavy Rain-The total rain for the 29th was 1.45 inches the most for the date in 17 years; the record is 1.47 inches in 1984. From midnight to 0700 of the 30th we had 0.35 inches. The total rain for the 23 hour period from 0800 on the 29th to 0700 of the 30th was 1.80 inches. The most intense rain during this event was 0.27 inches in one hour between 2300 and 2400 of the 29th.
April
  • April was a warm and a very dry month.
    Only April 1985 in the last 21 years was drier.

  • The mean temperature departure was +2.0°F.
  • This April was very similar to April 1994 as it was the warmest since 1994 and the rainfall was only 0.01 inch more than 1994.
  • We had 90°F on April 9th, which was highest in April since 1994.
  • April had the highest daily temperature range since 1996.
  • The highest minimum temperature for the month was 63°F that was the highest minimum for April since 1994.
  • It is unusual that we had twelve days with measurable precipitation and only five Aprils in the last 21 Aprils have had more days with rain but this April turned out to be the 2nd driest April in 21 years of records.

  • April 18th to May 8th was 20 days without measurable rainfall. May the 9th had 0.05 inches. The record for the last 21 years is 22 days without measurable rainfall. From April 18 until May 18th this station had only 0.08 inches of rain in 30 days,the least in 30 days since October 2000.
  • The most unusal record was the high barometer reading of May 6th that was the highest reading ever recorded in May at this station.
  • The 22nd set a new rainfall record for the date of 1.51 inches that was also the most rain in any May day since 1997.
