Observational records have been kept continuously since August 31, 1979. Station moved to Barcroft Hills on February 8, 1986. The new location is approximately 2.7 miles north and 0.3 miles west of the earlier location and is just northeast of Belvedere Elementary School.

Location Limitations

Visibility - Because of trees and the surrounding hills the maximum distance one can see is approximately three-tens of one mile. This doesn't allow one to report fog visibility unless it is very dense.

QuadMap of Barcroft Hills Weather Station

Temperature- The weather station gets direct daily sunlight from about mid-May until about mid-August because of the high sun angle. Tall deciduous trees are located about a hundred feet to the south of the station. Thus on sunny days from the time the trees gain their foliage until mid-May the maximum temperatures run a little cooler and can make a three to four degrees difference in the day's maximum temperature. Then from about mid-August until the trees lose their leaves a similar effect occurs. The station is located on a flat area at the base of a 25 foot hill sloped to the north at about 35 degrees which also contributes to lower maximum temperatures than other nearby sites.

Wind - The weather station elevation is 360 ft. and is open to the west and the east. Thus, wind speeds from west and east are accurately recorded. Deciduous trees to the south of the anemometer decrease south winds. North winds are but slightly decreased by distant tall trees (250 feet) to the north and this has less effect during the winter when the trees are bare of foliage. In the summer the deciduous trees present an unexpected result. A north wind will back off of the trees to the south and will be recorded coming from the opposite direction than what is correct. However, this does not occur during the winter when the trees are bare of foliage.
